NAME
unicensus - Gathers system configuration information and transports it
to the Revision and Configuration Management Server for	reporting and
       analysis

SYNOPSIS
       unicensus [flags1] [flags2 ...]

FLAGS1
This option is for RCM data collection and transport for post-process‐
       ing by the RCM server.

(This is an RCM option) This option performs the same as the -config
flag EXCEPT sys_check is run with the -all switch which collects a lot
more information most of which is not currently used by RCM.

Note: this can result in extremely long run times of an hour or
more depending on the complexity of your system configuration.

(This is an RCM option) All information is collected (i.e. sys_check is
       run with the -all switch).

Note: this can result in extremely long run times of an
hour or more depending on the complexity of your
system configuration. All information is collected except secu‐
rity/firewall/pathworks. Collects the same information	as the -all‐
nosecurity switch but transports it to the RCM server for post-process‐
       ing.

(This is an RCM option) This option performs a UCR run. If you use
this option with the UniCensus command, it will tell you which version
of UniCensus is installed on your system.

FLAGS2
This option can be added to any command line to generate debug	output
or trace information during a UniCensus run.	This option is used to
suppress the transport of data to Compaq, after a "-ucr" or	"-con‐
       fig/-fullconfig" run.

DESCRIPTION
UniCensus is a tool that enables users of the Compaq Tru64 UNIX operat‐
ing system to capture diagnostic information about their system. Uni‐
Census provides a comprehensive set of data elements critical to under‐
standing the system's operation. The data captured by UniCensus can be
a valuable asset in system performance tuning, system trouble shooting,
and even in disaster recovery operation. When	used on a scheduled
basis, UniCensus will provide a clear, concise audit trail of the sys‐
       tem's history and status.

UniCensus runs on Compaq Tru64 UNIX Version 3.2c and higher.

       UniCensus records information about:

The key features of UniCensus include:

       * A data collection mechanism for the Revision and Configuration
Management (RCM) tool. For further information, see the RCM web site
	 at:
	 http://smsat-www.ilo.dec.com/products/rcm/service/

       * A simple mechanism to provide support personnel with the kind of data
required to perform rapid failure analysis and preventative
	 maintenance.

       * The opportunity to archive key information for disaster recovery
	 operations.

       * HTML formatted output, allowing ease of use in viewing the captured
	 data.

       * The ability to email a compressed copy of the UniCensus output to a
user specified location for further analysis or archival.

EXAMPLES
To perform a unicensus collection for RCM enter: unicensus -config

	      This produces 3 files /var/opt/UniCensus/archive/rcm/rcmu-HOST‐
	      NAME-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.htm, /var/opt/UniCensus/archive/rcm/rcmu-
	      HOSTNAME-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.log and	/var/opt/UniCensus/ar‐
	      chive/rcm/rcmu-HOSTNAME-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.tar.Z

Where HOSTNAME is the hostname of the computer that the collec‐
tion is being run on and YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS is the date and time
that the collection is run on. The .htm file is the HTML output
from the collector which can be	viewed	with a standard web
browser.	The .log file is a log file giving details of the col‐
lection (if any errors occur they will	be detailed in this
file.).	The .tar.Z file is a tarred and compressed copy of the
other two and is the format that is transported back to the RCM
	      server.

NOTES
Use the unisetup utility to reconfigure unicensus.

unicensus must be run as root.

unicensus can be configured to run on a schedule.

unicensus is updated regularly.	New versions should be installed quar‐
       terly (or so).

unicensus uses sys_check as it's primary collector. sys_check in turn
uses DECevent and dupatch. All three of these utilities should be
installed on the machine that collections are being done for.

FILES
       /var/opt/UniCensus/rcm_config /var/opt/UniCensus/rcm_customer_info

LIMITATIONS
Most problems encountered with unicensus are due to problems with the
underlying collectors.	Please	see the limitations sections of the
       sys_check man page for details.

EXIT VALUES
The following exit values are returned:

       Successful completion An error occurred

RELATED INFORMATION
       sys_check (see man sys_check)

       DECevent (see man dia)

       dupatch (dupatch -h)
