EXPLAINATION
The Digital UNIX printf function provides functionality similar to the
OpenVMS SYS$FAO system service.	The printf function is part of the
stdio library that provides an insulating layer over the UNIX system
calls. The printf function writes to the standard output (typically a
tty or	pty). The fprintf function writes to a file opened with fopen
family of functions. It is possible to convert	a descriptor into a
FILE pointer suitable for use in fprintf by using the fdopen function.
