gspades(6)gspades(6)NAMEgspades - GTK+ NetSpades client
SYNOPSISgspades-V
slspades -o [-n name]
gspades [-n name] [-s server] [-p main-port] [-t taunt-port]
DESCRIPTIONgspades is the client portion of a stand-alone or networked spades
game. In order to play across the network, you must also have a
server, spadesd(6), running, either on the local machine or on a remote
machine.
OPTIONS-V Print version and exit.
-o Play offline (non-networked).
-n name
name is an eight character string used to identify you to the
other players. If you do not specify your name on the command-
line, you may enter it in the options dialog window.
-s server
server is the hostname on which the spades server is running.
You may also enter this in the options dialog window. This
overrides any SPADES_SERVER environment variable.
-p main-port
main-port is the port number on which gspades will look for the
spades server. If this value is not specified, the default
value of 7626 will be used.
-t taunt-port
taunt-port is the port number on which gspades will look for the
TauntServer(tm). If this value is not specified, the default
value of 7627 will be used.
ENVIRONMENT
SPADES_SERVER
The hostname of the machine running the spades server. If not
set, you may specify in the connection dialog box. Overridden
with the -s option.
GAME SETTINGS
When you first invoke gspades, an options dialog will pop up with three
tabs: server options, player options, and game options.
It is important to note that only the first player to register in a
given game is allowed to set options. All pther players' requested
options will be ignored.
SERVER OPTIONS
On the server options tab, you will find a check button to allow for
offline play, as well as entries for the host on which the spades
server is running and the ports to use for spades and the tauntserver
(you can probably leave the port settings at their default values). If
you are playing offline, you need only worry about the "Play offline"
button. When this button is depressed, all network-related options
will be greyed-out.
PLAYER OPTIONS
On the player options tab, you will see an entry for your name at the
bottom, and three buttons to select human or computer players for your
partner and opponents. These buttons are only available in network
mode (if you play offline, all other players must be computer players).
GAME OPTIONS
The game options tab contains two spinbuttons which allow you to set
the minimum team bid (defaults to 3) and the score at which the game
ends (defaults to 500). Future versions of gspades will have more
options here.
PLAYING GSPADES
A description of the game of spades is beyond the scope of this docu‐
mentation. Please see the Appendix A of the README file distributed
with slspades. If you already know how to play spades, read on.
BIDDING
When the game prompts you, adjust the bid spin-button until it dis‐
playes the number of tricks you think you personally will take with
your hand. Valid bids are 0-13 and nil, however, your team must also
satisfy the minimum bid of three.
PLAYING A CARD
Play a card in your hand simply by clicking on it with the mouse
pointer when it is your turn to play.
TAUNTING
You may send a message to the other players in the game by using the
taunt mechanism. At (almost) any point in the game, you may enter your
one-line taunt in the taunt box in the lower right of the window. Sub‐
mit your taunt either by pressing Enter, or by clicking the 'Send' but‐
ton. The taunt will then be displayed on the screens of all the play‐
ers, attributed to you (sorry, no anonymous taunting).
BUGS
None known.
