WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Dental surgeons said Saturday they have discovered why snoring can kill sometimes: It can actually cause damage to the arteries.
"When persons with sleep apnea fall asleep, their tongue falls back into their throat, blocking their airway. As they struggle for breath, their blood pressure soars," Dr. Arthur Friedlander, an oral surgeon who worked on the study, said in a statement. "We believe that this rise in blood pressure damages the inner walls of the carotid arteries lining the sides of the neck," he added. "Cholesterol and calcium stick to the injury sites and amass into calcified plaques, which block blood flow to the brain. The result is often a massive stroke."
"The calcium deposits are just the tip of the iceberg," he said. "The X-ray can't show the true size of the plaque, which is also made up of fat, platelets and other soft tissue." When a person is suffering from sleep apnea, air cannot flow in or out of the nose or mouth. Oxygen is not taken in so carbon dioxide builds to dangerous levels in the blood.
"It's like pressing a pillow over someone's face," Friedlander said.

Sleep apnea sufferers can have 20 to 60 or more involuntary breathing pauses -- called apneic episodes -- per hour, each lasting 10 seconds or longer. People with sleep apnea usually snore between episodes, and then snort, gasp or choke when they start breathing again. OSA sufferers never get a “good nights sleep” because repeated arousal's deprive patients of REM (deep-sleep stage) leading to chronic daytime exhaustion and long-term cardiovascular stress.
Consequently, OSA causes a drop in one’s blood oxygen saturation (SaO2) and an increase in the blood’s carbon dioxide (CO2). I've suffered from sleep apnoea for years, with debilitating effects on my mental and physical health. I am 42 years old and live in Pensacola, Florida with my wife and our four daughters. As they struggle for breath, their blood pressure soars," <strong>Dr. Arthur Friedlander</strong>, an oral surgeon who worked on the study, said in a statement. "We believe that this rise in blood pressure damages the inner walls of the carotid arteries lining the sides of the neck," he added. "Cholesterol and calcium stick to the injury sites and amass into calcified plaques, which block blood flow to the brain. The result is often a massive stroke." "The calcium deposits are just the tip of the iceberg," he said. "The X-ray can't show the true size of the plaque, which is also made up of fat, platelets and other soft tissue." When a person is suffering from sleep apnea, air cannot flow in or out of the nose or mouth. Oxygen is not taken in so carbon dioxide builds to dangerous levels in the blood. "It's like pressing a pillow over someone's

<br>I can't thank you enough for your sleep angel. My step-mother happened to get an e-mail from your company the day before I was going into the hospital for a sleep study. She bought herself one and one for me. My study showed that indeed I had oxygen deprivation going on and my 02 saturation rate was dropping 10 points during the night.I started wearing the sleep angel that next night, now in just 3 days I'm a whole new person! I've suffered from sleep apnea for years, with debilitating effects on my mental and physical health. I've had no help whatsoever from physicians who ignored my problem -probably because they didn't know much about it - even though I repeated what I had experienced, and what my wife had witnessed. Having tried various "anti-snoring" devices with little success, I came across the Sleep Angel website, and thought that at such a low price, I have little to lose anyway- so I ordered one. I've used it now for just 2 nights, but already there is a difference. My wife, who is a light sleeper, says that she did not hear or see me gasping, and that I am already looking better for it.
